About

Ramon de Punder is a co-founder of SlimBieden and a postdoctoral researcher in financial econometrics at the University of Amsterdam. He is a Candidate Fellow at the Tinbergen Institute and is also affiliated with the Amsterdam Center of Excellence in Risk, Resilience and Regulation, the Research Centre for Sustainable Investments and Insurance, and the Center for Nonlinear Dynamics in Economics and Finance. His research interests center on forecasting asset returns, particularly through stochastic-gradient-based time series methods, and on developing distribution-based methods for comparing forecasts and managing portfolio risk, together with the statistical and mathematical theory underlying these methods.
Ramon received his PhD in Econometrics from the University of Amsterdam. He previously completed the Research Master in Econometrics, Finance and Economics at the Tinbergen Institute and MSc degrees in Econometrics and Actuarial Science and Mathematical Finance at the University of Amsterdam.
A defining feature of his work is connecting academic rigor with practical application. He particularly enjoys applying statistical methods in settings where they must perform under real-world constraints, including collaborative work on real estate risk with insurer a.s.r., quantitative investing through the student-run Symphony Fund, and his current role at SlimBieden, where he oversees a production pipeline that turns state-of-the-art machine learning into daily distributional forecasts sold to consumers and businesses in the Dutch housing market. His ability to translate technical work beyond academia was also recognized by NPO Radio 1, which invited him to explain the mathematical ideas behind his JASA publication to a general audience.
